Today Dusty told us it was time to go. I will miss him terribly.

The Young Dusty

He was mostly ridden in Western Pleasure classes, but he did branch out. :)

Middle of July... Round 2
I don't have photos though. It's been over 90 for something like 2 weeks straight (or so it seems).
It has been warm for a while, but even after a trace clip, and then a higher trace clip, the hair that was left (over the top of him, basically to keep him from getting a sun burn) had been staying put, the shedding down to about what any horse drops when groomed.
Finallly, about a week ago and about a week in to the heat wave, he has started the second round of shedding.
Did I mention it's hot? And that I'm sweaty and what doesn't fall to the floor sticks to my face, arms, and legs if they're bare?
I look at the sticky, sweaty pile of hair all around him on the cross ties, and I don't see another animal. It's too hot to think, let alone play in sticky, sweaty hair to turn it into a sticky, sweaty clump that bears as passing resemblance to some type of creature.
Not gonna happen.
And he's far from finished. Joy!

Saturday the 27th. I actually typed Satyrday, and given how he was acting...
It actually is somewhat apropos.
When I'm there at the barn, I sometimes let Dusty out to wander up and down the length of the farm, grazing on the outside of the fences (where the grass is less eaten down).
Saturday, he was inside so I let him loose. He spent much of the time visiting the mares and teasing them - most of them are in their springtime heat.
He really is an old goat.
(Hmmmm... maybe an old goat next week....)

And after about 15 minutes of birdie ministrations:
Sunday because of other stuff happening, I didn't finish up with Tico until late and Dusty was already happily noshing his evening hay. I didn't have the heart to pull him away so no new hair art.

April 13th. Yes, another horse. This one is Tico
I was trying to convey his "tail in the air neener neener you can't catch me" persona. This is still Dusty's hair - Tico sheds about enough to produce 1/2 of this front leg.

In honor of his birthday (which was actually the day before) I attempted to make a Dusty Mini-me.
After a push with my foot made it look like it was moving, I decided to work with it:

This was the day after Dusty's 30th birthday, by the way. And here's the birthday boy, getting his (belated) "cake": carrots, apples, drizzled with molasses and sprinkled with sweet feed:
